The
FHI staff center is in the community of Apillapampa. Staff generally
travel by motorcycle to the communities that are furthest away.
Tocohalla is the furthest from the center. After a two hour motorcycle
ride, another hour is needed for the descent down a foot path leading
steeply into the community. Hornoma is the second largest community
and is a half hour's drive from Apillapampa. The dirt roads curve
around mountains and dip into valleys on their way through the communities.
All along it can be found herds of sheep and goats and community
members herding their animals. Most families have fields apart from
their homes in the communities. They drive oxen out to the fields
while carrying heavy wooden plows over their shoulders.
