The
FHI staff center is in the community of Confital built up around
a tole booth that collects fare from traffic that travels between
La Paz, Oruro, Potosi, and Cochabamba, four of the largest cities
in Bolivia. Their location gives these communities an advantage
over their more isolated neighbors. Closer market access make products
easier to buy and sell. However, at an elevation over 4300 meters
(14,000 feet), the climate makes living difficult. Treeless hills
are vulnerable to the cold winds that blow through. Frequent freezes
make farming all but impossible during the winter months.
