Welcome
to Lima, the capital city of Peru.
Nearly
9 million of the 25 million people in Peru have settled in Lima
and the population continues to grow. Families seeking a more
prosperous life settle on squatted land in the hilly and barren
outskirts of Lima each day. It is within these slum communities
that FHI-Peru works. Our child sponsorship communities (within
the district of San Juan de Lurigancho) are separated into three
centers: Matupe, Ayacucho and San Hiliarion.
San Juan
de Lurigancho is the most populated district in Lima. The majority
of the inhabitants fled to Lima from the Andean regions during
the terror of Peru's guerilla war which recently ended in the
late 80's. This war left countless dead and numerous children
orphaned.
The key
issues facing those living in the slums of San Juan de Lurigancho
are:
- poor
health
- lack of health education
- sanitation issues (ie: 75% have no means of sanitary trash disposal)
- no running water or sewage system
- unsafe living conditions
- lack of job opportunities
- inadequate scholastic education
- chronic malnutrition
- parent abandonment or parental disinterest
- spousal and child abuse
- delinquency and street crime
- a lack of community leadership and community identity
Food
for the Hungry staff members are working together with communities
to meet these challenges with the redeeming message of Christ's
love, shown in word and deed. This work is done through various
different Projects. To learn more about how you can personally make a positive difference in communities of San Juan de Lurigancho through the ministry of FHI-Peru click here .
