Child Sponsorship Program

Financial pledges made by sponsors living in countries around the world help FHI improve the lives of children who live in child sponsorship communities. Through the FHI Sponsorship Program children have access to a variety of resources such as educational programs and much needed health care. They hear the Gospel message of Jesus Christ and are taught Biblical values. Child Sponsorship funds help provide school supplies, Vacation Bible School, community development projects and support children's clubs and community celebrations such as birthday parties. Access to vital resources and positive activities all contribute to the healthy development of not only the children, but the community as well.

Agricultural Development Program

FHI Peru works to help impoverished farmers and their families in a variety of ways. Farmers are educated in effective and environment friendly farming techniques. New crops are introduced which increases the crop's market value and encourages a more balanced diet. Farmers are also trained in resource management techniques. We are currently working on a School Garden project which will be used, among other things, to educate children on the value of a balanced diet.

Well and Latrine Program

With 90% of the rural population and 23% of the urban population without access to clean water, health problems abound. In many of the communities where FHI-Peru works up to 95% of the population suffers from intestinal parasites. In our jungle communities FH teaches about the dangers of drinking contaminated water and the benefits of using a well. Working side by side with the community, we put in wells and train community members in the maintenance of them. FH also works with local churches to bring similar projects to other villages in remote areas of the jungle.

An equally damaging problem to a community's health is the improper disposal of human waste. In response to this issue FH educates community members on the importance of latrines. Like the well projects we work with the community to install latrines and educate community members on their maintenance.

Emergency Relief

FHI Peru has consistently responded with Godīs love and provision in times of natural and economic disaster. In recent years, partly due to the El Nino effect, Peru has experienced severe flooding in different parts of the country. With support from churches and from our national offices around the world, we have responded with desperately needed food, shelter, medicine, and clothes.

Micro-Enterprise Program

Over 50% of Peru's population lives below the poverty line. Most families barely survive on a day by day basis. This ongoing crisis makes it impossible for individuals with aspirations for a business to save enough money to get their dream off the ground. FHI Peru has a Micro-Enterprise program which offers small, low-interest loans to entrepreneurs who need aid to get their business rolling. Along with the loan program we educate recipients (and other community members) on effective and ethical business practices. In addition FH offers programs which educate individuals in specific trades such as sewing or handicrafts which can be sold in the market.

Child-to-Child Program

This project develops children (ages 8 to 14) in areas such as leadership skills and health awareness. Children learn about primary and preventative health care, proper nutrition, oral hygiene, and other important lessons. They then use games, songs, and group activities to share their new knowledge with other children in their community and in schools.

Integrated Development Training Program

It is crucial that the community members in the areas we serve take a personal interest in the projects and programs that FHI Peru offers. This interest must lead to participation and ultimately ownership. Without community partnership, development is not sustainable. Both spiritual and physical programs are designed with the goal to be ultimately run and maintained by local community members. It is for this reason that we work specifically with churches, leaders and families. We work to strengthen, equip and encourage them to make positive changes in their communities.

Child Survival Program

FHI Peru is blessed to have several nurses who serve on our staff. Our nursing staff works in numerous areas, but their primary health program is the education of Health Promoters. Health Promoters are community volunteers who are trained in basic heath care as well as educated in how to treat and prevent problems such as tuberculosis, acute diarrhea, and chronic malnutrition. Health Promoters then act as a resource for the community and reach out to train others. In this manner our nursing staff can effectively reach an entire community with life saving health education.
