SITUATION OF THE CHILDRENSpiritual SituationThe children at the start have no personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Most of them knew they are Christians because they are born to a Catholic family. They received baptism from the Church and the ritual of Confirmation. They have no knowledge about the Bible but they are aware that there is a God. They associate Him to a policeman who will punish them whenever they commit mistakes. Through Child Development Program, the children were engaged to Bible studies. This has opened their eyes to the true meaning of Christianity. There are still many children in this community who needs to be nurtured spirituality. The pull of the environment especially to the children to engage in vices and unproductive endeavor is very strong. Child Development Program could make a big difference in the lives of the children. [Top] Intellectual & Vocational SituationElementary education is compulsory to all Filipino children. A number could complete elementary education but not all could pursue secondary education. Poor children attend Government supported schools but then the government could not provide all the school needs. What the government could not provide, the parents must provide. This is one of the main reasons why children from poor families could not afford to send all their children to school. Even if parents value education, the lack of resources is a great hindrance. [Top] Social/Moral SituationChildren at a very young age were exposed to the moral and social problems of their communities. Children in Metro Manila are exposed to gambling, alcoholism, drug addiction and promiscuity in the family. Most children lack proper guidance the reason why some of them are not disciplined, no respect and utter curse. [Top] Physical & Health SituationThe common sickness of the children in this area is mostly upper respiratory tract infection. Most of the children have chronic cough and colds. The reasons are house congestion, pollution and dirty surrounding. Most children are underweight due to inadequate food and poor health diet. Children's teeth are decayed early because of eating too much sweet and the lack of oral care. [Top] Emotional SituationThe emotional status of the children could be said unstable. Most of them are longing for emotional security. The sponsored children are noted to be longing for attention from workers in Child Development Program. They like to be hug and to be cared for. Some children said, "they could not feel the love of their parents as most of them have no time for them. They are busy earning a living." [Top] [Next Page]
