ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Educational Programs & Activities

Education in the Philippines is becoming costly. Even in government-run schools, parents have to pay for their children's tuition fees and to provide for their school needs (school bag, uniforms, notebooks, pencils, etc) Child Development Program helped parents to pay for school tuition fees, meet school needs of their children, cover payment for school projects like carpentry, handicrafts, etc., provide books of children and help CDP children engaged in school activities such as school field trips, camps and occasional programs.

Year 1999-2000

  • 96 children have access to primary education and 8 children to secondary education

  • 70 % of CDP children improved in their school performance as a result of school material distribution and follow-up.

  • Links with teachers and parents helped solved problem among slow-learner students.

Health activities

Children in poor communities are often neglected and are deprived of their health needs. Most cases of illnesses in the community are preventive in nature. CDP provides health teachings regarding those illnesses and children's health classes. Supplemental feedings were also conducted. Monitoring of the children's weight and health status were also made.

Year 1999-2000

  • There is a 30% decrease in the incidence of illness among the children as a result of health teachings done. The rate of illness used to be 70%.

  • 78 CDP parents who attended health seminars learned about common illnesses and how to prevent it.

  • About 70% families in the community show consciousness in proper hygiene by cleaning their streets.

Spiritual Nurture

When Jesus told His disciples in Mat. 19:14, "Let the children come to me and do not hinder them; for they belong to the kingdom of heaven," It clearly shows how God loves the children. So it is important that every child should feel that they are loved. One way of letting them know of God's love is through FHI CDP 's regular Extension Class, Junior Worship and Sunday School. We also let the parents feel that they are also loved by conducting various activities such as Bible Study, Prayer Meeting, Fellowship and Worship Service.

Year 1999-2000

  • There is a 50% increase in attendance among children and parents in CDP activities.

  • Our Daily Vacation Church School (DVCS) was attended by 93CDP and 80 non-CDP children. About 50% said this is the first time they attend DVCS and learned about Jesus.

  • 104 CDP parents and sponsored children received for the first time a copy of old and new testament Bible.

Greetings from the Staff

Dear Sponsors,

           Greetings from Big Banana!

I would like to thank you for sponsoring 104 children in this area. Sta. Quiteria is just one of the economically depressed areas in Kalookan City. Big Banana is the community being assisted by FHI/Philippines through the Child Development Program (CDP).

Our partner church and its members, the FHI staff together with the leaders of the area, worked hand in hand into reaching out to the community through various activities to meet the physical, mental, social, moral, emotional and the spiritual needs of the families in the community.

The year 2004 has been a blessed year for the Big Banana since this is the start of CDP in the area. God's love was truly felt through people like you who has big heart and willing to give for a good cause.

I had been a witness as to how the CDP has been changing lives and providing help to our people. We all owe it firstly to God and of course to you. You are always in our prayers. May the Lord God bless you.

Sincerely,
Grace Olazo
