HOME History & Vision Child Development Program Community Involvement Get Invelved

The fire struck in the community of Pulo, Landayan, Laguna at midday on January 28. Within 30 minutes, 90 families (540 individuals) lost their homes and most of their belongings. Since most parents were at work and most children were at school, residents were not home to move their belongings out of the burning buildings.

One child (not a participant in FHI's child development program) is reported to have died in the fire.

Some of the affected families are now housed in a multipurpose community facility. The building was constructed with funding from the Osaka, Japan Rotary Club, via FHI's Japan partner office. Others families have been moved to empty units in a nearby private housing project.

FHI staff and members of the God's Compassion Christian Church have cooked meals for the affected families and have distributed noodles, rice, sugar and milk.

FHI and the mayor's office are working with the families to help them find alternative long-term housing.
