VISION OF A CHILD - (Luke 2:52)

Food for the Hungry International/Philippines works in partnership with at least 31 partner churches in the implementation of Child Development Program.  To accomplish the Vision of a Child the following activities were conducted.

A. Character Building/Values Formation

1. Weekly Children’s Meeting

FHI CDP children meet once a week for their regular meeting. The weekly meeting is providing children various activities such as Bible study, arts and music, handicraft, group dynamics, games and puppetry.  The regular meetings help the children know God and His good intention, for them to discover and develop their God-given gifts and talents and to gain skills in leadership.  One hot meal is provided to our CDP children after the meeting.

FHI in partnership with a Christian organization called Friends of Jesus distributed personal copies of Old and New Testament Bibles. A total of 50 Bibles were given to our CDP children and 130 Bibles for the adults. FHI also received comic books from the Philippine Bible Society.

2.  Youth Empowerment Seminar

FHI and its local church partner continue to train CDP youth with interest in teaching the Bible. The training had resulted for young people to experience a sense of meaning, value responsibility and spent their time for productive and worthwhile activities.

FHI is engaging young people to an awareness program regarding issues confronting them. One activity conducted is the Valentine’s forum where young people learned the meaning of agape love and God’s intention for man and woman. The activity provided young people confidence and to have wisdom as they deal with relationship with opposite sex based on the Biblical principles.

3. Children and Youth Camp

A total of 2,000 CDP children participated in the annual children and youth camp held at various camp side outskirt of Manila. The theme of this year’s camp is “I am special”. The camping has resulted for children to realize that they were created for a purpose and that they are special in the sight of God. The camping have helped foster leadership skill to the children and taught them the value of responsibility

4. Daily Vacation Church School (DVCS)

The annual Daily Vacation Church School was conducted for one week at three hours session per day last April. The attendance recorded was more than 200 children. Every summer, children look forward to such activity with excitement. It was a time of meeting new friends, spending their vacation wisely and learning new stories from the Bible, songs and memory verse.

B. Education and Training

1.  School Assistance

Closure of classes in the Philippines is April and resumes in June. CDP children who are graduating were assisted in the graduation fees as a school requirement.   Classes for school year 2004-2005 started last June. FHI provided our CDP children their school materials such as bag, notebooks, pens, papers and crayons. Aside from the school materials, FHI provided partial payment of school contribution fees and gave children school uniforms.

B.     Computer Training/Information Technology

FHI continue to provide basic computer and information technology training to our high school children.  The training is said to be very helpful because it provided our children additional knowledge and skills in computer, which they could not learn well in school because of the lack of equipment and facilities.

C.  Career Guidance to high school students

It has been an observation among the high school students to lack the desire to pursue higher     education. Meeting with them, some are intending to find work immediately after graduation while some is thinking about marriage.  The purpose of this activity is to provide assistance to our CDP high school graduates regarding their career and God’s good intention for them to have a better life and future. Invited speakers have discussed topics such as the importance of attaining higher education, knowing God’s purposes and intention for their future, the obstacles in the attainment of their ambition and guide to choosing a career. The activity has been helpful and was appreciated by the youth.

D. Tutorial Classes

Tutorial classes are conducted by FHI to assist children who are slow learners. Some of our CVSFscholars are volunteering to help tutor said children. Tutorial classes are held three times a week. The tutorial program is greatly appreciated by the parents considering that many of them do not have the knowledge and skill to teach their children because of their educational background and also the means.

Social Development/Physical Enrichment:

A.      Field Trip

A total of 850 younger elementary CDP children were brought to a field trip. The children experienced a very rare opportunity to see other place and enjoy the beauty of creation. One of the exciting experienced that will not be forgotten by the kids is the time of swimming. Since summer is so hot in the Philippines, a dip in the pool provided refreshment and relaxation to them. The entire kids enjoyed the whole day activity

B.      Child Development Day (CDP) Celebration

The annual CDP day celebration was held at the Ninoy Aquino Sports Stadium through sports fest. It was a rare opportunity that the entire CDP sponsored children gathered together for the event. This year’s celebration was done through sports fest competition.  The children enjoyed their participation in the events such as sack race, relays and track and field.  They realized the value of winning the prize and to be happy event in defeat.
