FHI/Philippines Semi-Annual Report Period from January to June 2004 Food for the Hungry International/Philippines in partnership with the churches and the local leadership have conducted the following activities to help achieve the Vision of Community (VOC) I. Values Formation/Spiritual NurtureA. Regular Bible StudySimilarly, parents were engage in a regular bible study. Accordingly, this has resulted for positive changes as testified by the parents. They compare the big difference of their lives before and after knowing the Lord Jesus on a personal basis. In the sharing time conducted with the parents, many have verbalized their gratitude to God for being FHI CDP recipient and not expecting the changes that have happened in their lives as a result of their involvement. FHI was said to be a blessing as well to our partner churches. Church leadership was happy that many of our FHI CDP parents are actively involved in the church activities. Many of the parents have learned to serve by being ushers in the church, as liturgists during worship service and by being part of the church choir. FHI partner churches gave encouraging reports with regards to the FHI CDP families who have totally left their old lives and dedicated their whole family to the Lord’s service. Currently, churches were challenged continuously to minister to men or to fathers. A new strategy to involve the fathers in spiritual activities was started such as men’s fellowship, coffee bible study and men’s convention. FHI believe that parents play a vital role in influencing their children. In the Career Guidance seminar conducted to the CDP high school students, parents were given recognition as to how they exerted effort in rearing their children and helping them achieve their dreams. The activity put the parents to tears and felt good for the appreciation made by their children. Many of the parents present expressed vocal support to their children in their pursuit of achieving higher education C. Spiritual RetreatFHI engaged parents to a whole day parent’s spiritual retreat. To many of them, it was a very enriching experienced. The retreat serves as an eye opener in terms of their faith journey and a reminder of what Christ did on the cross to save mankind. II. Strengthening Parent’s Organization A. Regular meeting with area leaders Once a week meeting is held with the community leaders. The purpose of which is to have a regular dialogue and discussion of the needs and problems in the community. For FHI CDP worker, the regular meeting is an effective way in addressing the needs and problems not only of the community but the FHI family members. The cluster meeting is conducted once a month for the FHI parents. In this meeting, FHI staff emphasized the parent’s share of responsibility in developing their children. The meeting serves as a good venue for voicing out problems, providing suggestions on the improvement of the CDP program and working together to achieve the Vision of Community. III. Health55 mothers attended training on de-worming. The training has resulted for parents to learn the importance of sanitation and proper nutrition. The training was facilitated by FHI trained health workers and Barangay health workers in the community. At the end of the training, parents were given de-worming medicines to de-worm their children.
