   FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY INTERNATIONAL

   gives hope for the poor

 

    Food for the Hungry International (FHI) is a Christian ecumenical development organization working in more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In Sweden, FHI is represented by the charitable foundation Friends of the Hungry (DVH) which was founded in 1998. The work of FHI is aimed at the poorest among the poor and seeks to meet their social, spiritual and economic needs.

 

    Development. The focus of the work is sustainable development with support for self-reliance in the form of:

¨    preventative health care

¨    Food security, including land reclaim, tree planting, etc.

¨    Micro loans to small enterprises

¨    Provision of fresh water

¨    Education and sponsorship programs

 

Relief and rehabilitation.

Sometimes our support takes the form of acute relief work. In disasters such as earthquakes, flooding, refugees, etc., FHI aims at supplying relief within 24 hours.

 

FHI’s programmes for relief and rehabilitation are normally concentrated in three distinct areas:

¨    Supply of food, shelter and equipment

¨    Basic health care, sanitation and fresh water

¨    Reunification of families
