The Kapchorwa CDP Program (5671-82) is located in Kapterewa (CDP Centre No. 489) and Brim (CDP Centre No. 487) both of which are 70 km east of the district capital of Kapchorwa which is about 250km east of Kampala (Uganda's capital city).
Two neighboring tribes (the Pokot in Kenya and the Karamajong in Uganda) of warrior-like cattle keepers have stolen oxen that people depended on for plowing, meat, milk, and the income these produced. During their raids they have also murdered those who stayed to resist, and destroyed homes, personal property, and farm animals. Agriculture is the major source of income, but recent weather changes have decreased agriculture output adding to the hunger and poverty.
Schools cannot teach properly because they lack classrooms, paper, pencils, desks, etc. Teachers are not qualified. Most children drop out because they cannot afford the costs. Parents don’t see the value of education.
Although people call themselves Christians, few know Jesus and almost no one knows how God’s Word ought to impact their lives. An example is the immorality that is spreading AIDS and producing many orphans. Most women and children walk long distances to get dirty water from unprotected springs or ponds. There are few latrines and no idea that cleanliness produces health. The few clinics that exist have incompetent staff, and few medications.
We have a strong Christian staff who will look for opportunities to share Jesus in all of his work activities.
